Le Dieu Néant. Théologies Négatives à l'Aube des Temps Modernes is a study of the diverse intellectual possibilities presented to Medieval and Renaissance intellectuals by the negative theology of pseudo-Dionysius the Areopagite. It deals specifically with the ontological, epistemological and semiotic aspects of interpretations of Dionysian philosophy developed by such thinkers as Thomas Aquinas, Ficino, Cusanus and Bovelles. It also attempts to differentiate between the negative theology specific to Dionysius, and those elements of negative thinking peculiar to Hermetism and the Christian Cabala. This analysis of negative theology sheds new light on the differences between major intellectual currents of European philosophy (scholasticism, Italian Neoplatonism, German and French mysticism, occultism), while introducing useful distinctions into the history of the Dionysian tradition itself.

This volume deals with the trinitarian debate in early eighteenth-century England. Samuel Clarke's trinitarian thought represents a reappraisal of that doctrine in the light of early modern philosophy and close Patristic study. This work utilizes current studies on the fourth-century debate, recent evaluations of Latitudinarianism, and previously unpublished theological manuscripts of Sir Isaac Newton's, to shed light on Clarke's treatment of this central Christian doctrine. The conclusion calls for a reclassification of Clarke's thought by historians of doctrine. The volume is organized in three parts. The first examines Clarke's intellectual milieu, the second treats his use of sources, and the third evaluates his role in the Trinitarian controversy. Students of Latitudinarianism, the doctrine of the Trinity and Isaac Newton's thought will all profit from this discussion. In addition, those interested in the relationship between science and religion will benefit.

Marcellus of Ancyra (ca. 285/290 - circa 374) was one of the prominent bishops who fought against the Eusebians at the council of Nicaea. After this council, he was the first to attack them, and especially Asterius of Cappadocia. Only fragments of his work were preserved. These fragments, together with a letter which he wrote in 341 to Julius of Rome, the only undisputed works of Marcellus, are collected in this volume. The book opens with an introduction, contains the edition with German translation, notes and indices. In contrast to the former editions of Marcellus' works, this edition follows substantially the new order of the fragments established by K. Seibt (1994). As a result, Marcellus' fragments give an idea of how his work was originally structured.
